about

Part 1 of "Blur-Lights In The Videodrome"

-This first section eventually turned into the outtro of Night Verses' 3rd LP "From the Gallery of Sleep" used in the song "Infinity Beach." Although this was written in this solo first to be performed at Meinl fest earlier that year, when recording Night Verses' album, I had to leave the studio 2 weeks early to go record this version with Meinl Cymbals in Nashville, Tennessee. Strangely enough, a lot of the work I'm proudest of in my career often gets recorded within weeks or even days of each other. I also had to leave the studio early during Night Verses first EP recording to compete in the 2012 Drum Off finals. Then I had to fly home the day after this solo was performed at Meinl Drum Festival in Germany to play Fever 333's first show in the parking lot of Randy's Donuts in Inglewood, California.

-For those who made it to the end of the original video, you might have seen that I dedicated this solo to my Aunt Cathy who died of cancer during the time I first started composing this piece. If you notice in the video, the white noise created in the beginning of this track is my ride cymbal spinning under a set of Mala beads. I got those beads in a meditation workshop I took earlier that year, which is where I learned Japa meditation. We repeated the mantra "Ram" meaning "The Light Within You." I taught that meditation and mantra to my aunt in the final weeks of her life and she used those same beads to meditate until the day she died.

-At one point I posted an "Attention Deficit Drum" video and someone commented saying, "I guess these ideas are different, but you could never actually use these in a live setting. A drum key on the cymbals would never work live." The minute I saw that comment, I knew I had to find a way to put it in. Note to all musicians reading this: Do whatever you want and don't listen to stupid people.

-The tones and pace of this intro were my attempt at paying homage to my favorite genre of music: Trip Hop. I thought it would be an unexpected move to start this slow given my musical reputation, but it fit the thesis and ended up being on of my favorite parts to play.

-That intro quote is Brian Eno and it forever changed my perspective on music and art in general. I had to find a way to put it in the beginning to help me get mentally prepared at the start of each rehearsal day while prepping the piece.
